Legal Research in an Artificially Intelligent World (On-Demand)

Course Description

Legal research is costly in two ways: time and money. Learn how to evaluate when to spend time to save money using reliable free internet legal research sites, and when to spend money in order to save time by investing in fee-based legal research services that utilize artificial intelligence. Participants will receive access to a website with links to legal research resources to help streamline future research efforts.

• Learn how to evaluate legal research resources as Good, Cheap, and/or Fast
• Learn what you get for your money – Bloomberg, Fastcase, Lexis Advance, and Westlaw Edge
• Learn what you can get for free
• Learn how artificial intelligence and litigation analytics can streamline your research efforts

Syllabus

1. What you had available to you in law school, or fee-based legal research options (now there is Bloomberg Law, Lexis Advance, and Westlaw Edge)
2. What you have learned in practice, or free and low-cost legal research resources
3. Model Rules of Professional Conduct 1.1: Competence (and how this relates to legal research)
   1. 1. • Comment 8: “To maintain the requisite knowledge and skill, a lawyer should keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology.”
4. Legal artificial intelligence (AI) and litigation analytics
5. Evaluating legal research resources, based on time and money
