The concepts of parental alienation and domestic violence are often intertwined in court cases. Frequently, family judges are asked to determine whether a parent has alienated a child from the other parent through brainwashing and indoctrination or whether the child has legitimate reasons for rejecting the parent due to the parent’s abuse or severe neglect. A review of peer-reviewed research and judicial opinions from around the country show that viewing the concepts of parental alienation and domestic violence as an either/or conditionality is a false dichotomy. Absence of abuse is an integral part of the parental alienation diagnostic checklist. While causing parental alienation constitutes family violence. This course will help family law judges, practitioners, court-appointed professionals to understand the interplay between domestic violence and parental alienation.
