Course Description
This course is designed to help attorneys, law students, and other legal professionals improve their writing. Writing is a core skill of the legal profession and improving yours will make your communication dramatically more impactful, persuasive, and effective. This program is structured around practical, concrete tips that are accessible and can improve your legal writing immediately.
Principles
- Legal writing is a core professional skill that shapes credibility.
- Every brief, motion, email, and legal document creates an impression of the lawyer and the client. Effective legal writing should be purposeful, precise, persuasive, and professional, because strong substance can be undermined by unclear or careless writing.
- Clarity and plain English should be the default.
- Legal writing is more effective when it uses direct language, active voice, concrete words, and concise sentences rather than unnecessary legalese, jargon, or complicated constructions. The goal is not to sound more “legal,” but to make the reader understand the argument quickly.
- Structure should make the reader’s job easier.
- Good legal writing presents information in a logical order, with a clear purpose, roadmap, headings, paragraphs, and transitions. Lawyers should lead with the important point and organize supporting facts and authority so that the reader can readily follow the analysis.
- Write for the audience and purpose.
- Effective writing changes depending on whether the audience is a judge, opposing counsel, client, colleague, or other legal professional. Tone, level of detail, and presentation should be tailored accordingly, while remaining respectful, confident, and professional.
- Accuracy, candor, and disciplined writing habits are essential—especially when using AI.
- Lawyers remain responsible for the work they submit, including AI-assisted work. Attorneys should verify authorities and factual assertions, protect confidentiality, maintain candor to the tribunal, and critically review AI-generated material. Consistent habits such as outlining, revising, editing, and proofreading can substantially improve the quality and reliability of legal writing.
