Course Description

In this workshop, the presenters will deconstruct a critical component of any objective or persuasive writing – the counterargument. Rather than resorting to a loosely flung rebuttal to the opposing view, this lecture will present a better, more effective approach. Two primary organizational structures will be introduced: a counter-application format and a counter-analysis format. These two approaches were explained in their recently published second edition of Becoming a Legal Writer.

Robin Boyle Laisure, Esq. is Professor of Legal Writing at St. John's University School of Law, where she has taught legal research, writing, and contract drafting since 1994. She previously practiced law as a bankruptcy and corporate associate at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler and Dewey Ballantine, and as a law clerk for a bankruptcy judge in the Southern District of New York, and has authored multiple books on legal writing and drafting.

Sandy Patrick, Esq.
Sandy Patrick, Esq. is a Professor of Law and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Lewis & Clark Law School, where she teaches courses in legal writing, lawyering, and professional practice. She has extensive legal experience including a clerkship on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, service as an Assistant Attorney General handling appellate cases, and practice in civil litigation at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, and has co-authored four widely-used legal writing textbooks.
