Course Description
In this workshop, the presenters will deconstruct a critical component of any objective or persuasive writing – the counterargument. Rather than resorting to a loosely flung rebuttal to the opposing view, this lecture will present a better, more effective approach. Two primary organizational structures will be introduced: a counter-application format and a counter-analysis format. These two approaches were explained in their recently published second edition of Becoming a Legal Writer.
Syllabus
- The purpose of counterargument
- Proposing a shared vocabulary and community
- Proposing counterapplication
- Proposing counter-analysis
- Demonstrating alternative structures for counterargument
