Course Description

This program examines professionalism and civility in legal practice through the lens of ethics rules, bar professionalism standards, and everyday lawyering judgment. It explains the difference between the ethics “floor” and the broader professionalism “ceiling,” and shows how civility affects advocacy, client service, credibility, and risk management. Using examples from written communications, discovery, negotiations, hearings, supervision, and client counseling, the presentation identifies where incivility tends to arise and how lawyers can respond effectively without sacrificing advocacy. The program also offers practical tools, including decision points, scripts, and checklists, to help lawyers reduce misconduct risk, improve professionalism, and preserve trust with courts, clients, and counterparties.
