Course Description

This program will address how the practice of law impacts lawyers’ well-being. The program will address how legal practice has the potential to produce burnout, the reasons for the burnout, why lawyer support programs do not work, and what strategies can be employed to prevent burnout and maximize performance as a lawyer. The lecture will address best practices for peak mental performance and burnout prevention, as well as structural modifications to law firm billing practices.

Syllabus

  1. Identify the inherent features of the practice of law and how it affects the mental well-being of practitioners
  2. Understand why lawyer support programs do not work
  3. III. Understand the concept of linearity and how it is the root cause of the crisis in mental health in the legal profession
  4. Understand how to apply the concepts of athletics to brain work to combat burnout and improve capacity over time
  5. Understand the different types of recovery and what type to use to unleash peak performance
  6. Identify practices that can be used to create a “brain-athlete” lifestyle and law practice
  7. VII. Identify fee structures, billing practices, and law-firm culture initiatives that could be employed to achieve peak performance for professional and paraprofessional staff
