Sentencing is often the most important stage of a criminal case, requiring advocates to present their clients as more than the conduct underlying a conviction. Drawing on more than 25 years of combined experience as criminal defense attorneys, Teny Geragos and Jacob Kaplan will examine effective federal sentencing advocacy and the strategies that can meaningfully influence outcomes. The program will explore the preparation of persuasive sentencing memoranda, the development and presentation of mitigation evidence, and techniques for humanizing clients before the court. Attendees will also gain practical insight into oral advocacy at sentencing and how to craft a compelling narrative that gives judges a complete picture of the person standing before them.
